Video of the Week- The Daily Show “Back in Black: Artisanal Foods”

Louis Black

Last night on The Daily Show, Lewis Black gave an epic Back in Black report on the over-usage of the latest food trend- “artisanal.” To Black it’s as it “they’re pissing on our legs and telling us it’s champagne!”

If you’re ordering Kobe beef you better rethink that decision because it’s only grown in Japan and it’s illegal to import it in the US. “You might as well go across the street o White Castle cause it’s the same f*ing thing.” In response to Dunkin’ Donuts latest authentic bagels Black retorts, “Really? Authentic bagels? Because unless you changed your name to Dunkin Donutsowitz at Ellis Island, then I doubt it.” He doesn’t stop there… he even hilariously picks apart the “trust fund hipster talking out of his ass… spencer or lynos or whatever his name is” casted in their commercial whose definition of artisanal involves both Latin and Greek roots.

He delves into the abuse of the word “Artisanal” by the corporate food word, slapping the word on their products to increase sales. Black wants to make it clear a good “Rule of Thumb: if your product is served by dumping it out of a plastic bag and into a bowl of microwaved chili it’s not artisan. And if it takes less than 30 minutes to make and deliver, I’m not sure if even food.”
